Add a little recycled cool into your jewelry collection with these handmade safety pin cuff bracelets from South Africa. The "beads" are made of recycled telephone wire, computer cable scraps and pieces of thrown-out plastic tubing strung on elastic. These cuffs are colorful, a little tough, a little playful, and one hundred percent unique!
A group of South African artisans called Inkwenkwezi began making these bracelets out of recycled materials in 1992. Their name refers to a special star that appears over Africa prior to the plowing season. It is a hopeful word, evoking hope for a rich harvest. Today, the rising demand for these bracelets supports a community of five people.
